Elke medische behandeling begint met het stellen van de juiste diagnose. Deze diagnose ligt echter niet altijd meteen voor de hand. Zoals bij de volgende casus:
Een 42-jarige vrouw kwam met gewichtsverlies, malaise, hoofdpijn, braken en verwardheid naar de SEH. Ze had tuberculeuze meningitis, bevestigd door PCR uit de liquor. Ze werd behandeld met tuberculose-medicatie en corticosteroïden. Na twee weken werd een ventriculoperitoneale drain geplaatst door hydrocephalus. Haar situatie verbeterde en tests voor pulmonale tuberculose en hiv waren negatief.
