Een infectie van een vaatprothese of endoprothese (‘vascular graft or endograft infection’: VGEI) is een ernstige complicatie die kan optreden na een chirurgische ingreep, en gaat gepaard met een hoge morbiditeit en mortaliteit. Een multidisciplinaire aanpak door vaatchirurgen, internist-infectiologen, artsen-microbioloog, radiologen, nucleair geneeskundigen en ziekenhuisapothekers is nodig om een VGEI adequaat te diagnosticeren en te behandelen. Een gestructureerd diagnostisch, antibiotisch, en chirurgisch behandelalgoritme helpt bij de klinische besluitvorming met als doel de klinische uitkomst van patiënten met een VGEI te verbeteren.
