Invasieve infecties met Campylobacter fetus zijn een zeldzaamheid. Ze treffen doorgaans specifieke patiëntpopulaties met een zekere mate van immuunincompentie of met een verhoogde, al dan niet beroepsmatige blootstelling aan runderen, geiten en schapen. Bij het uitdiepen van de anamnese wordt frequent een associatie met één van deze factoren gevonden. Bij invasieve infecties worden hoge percentages van cardiovasculaire foci beschreven, zoals endocarditis of aortitis, zeker bij patiënten met pre-existente cardiovasculaire problemen. Het verdient dan ook de aanbeveling om actief deze betrokkenheid uit te sluiten, dan wel aan te tonen.
