In de update van 2024 van de multidisciplinaire richtlijn Seksueel overdraagbare aandoeningen wordt terughoudendheid geadviseerd bij diagnostiek en behandeling van chlamydia zonder klachten. Bij klachten en behandeling van symptomatische vaginale en urethrale chlamydia-infecties worden doxycycline en azitromycine als gelijkwaardige alternatieven gezien. Voor de behandeling van faryngeale gonorroe wordt nu 1.000 mg intramusculair eenmalig geadviseerd. In de richtlijn wordt meer aandacht besteed aan genderdiversiteit en gendersensitiviteit.
