Infecties met SARS-CoV-2 verlopen bij kinderen over het algemeen mild. Dit artikel bespreekt een 11-jarige jongen die zich presenteerde met ‘multisystem inflammatory syndrome’ geassocieerd met COVID-19. Dit is een ernstig inflammatoir ziektebeeld dat gepaard kan gaan met circulatoire, respiratoire en renale insufficiëntie, en overeenkomsten kan vertonen met de ziekte van Kawasaki. Het klinisch beeld, aanvullende diagnostiek en behandeling worden in dit artikel beschreven. Herkenning van het ziektebeeld is van belang om adequate behandeling tijdig in te zetten en de klinische uitkomst te verbeteren.
